An exhibition in Grudziądz explores 250 years of the city's historic fortress and its lasting influence on military and civic life.
The Museum of Rev. Dr. Władysław Łęga in Grudziądz is presenting “Grudziądz Fortress. 250th Anniversary of the Beginning of Construction”, a temporary exhibition examining the history of one of Poland's most significant military fortifications.
Running until 13 September 2026, the exhibition traces the development of the fortress from the start of its construction in 1776 to its influence on the city's military, economic and social history over the following two and a half centuries.
A Fortress That Shaped the City
The Grudziądz Fortress was built as a strategic military stronghold, but its impact extended far beyond defence.
Its construction stimulated the local economy, creating employment and supporting the city's growth, particularly during major expansion works in the nineteenth century. Over the years, soldiers, engineers, labourers and prisoners from more than a dozen nations passed through the fortress, making it an important meeting point of different cultures and histories.
Today, the main section of the fortress remains under military administration, preserving one of the finest examples of eighteenth-century military engineering in Poland.
Discovering the Fortress's Legacy
The exhibition explores how the fortress influenced the development of Grudziądz while highlighting its architectural and engineering significance.
Through historical material and museum collections, visitors can follow the changing role of the citadel across different periods, from its original military purpose to its place in the city's identity today. Rather than focusing solely on military history, the exhibition also examines the people whose lives were connected with the fortress over generations.
